For my Children

[Verse 1]

My children are treasures. Bring joy.

Fill me with laughter and comfort, oh boy.

They have triumphs. Reach goals, all new.

They have good health and friendships too.

[Verse 2]

In our family, we love lyrics and songs.

One day I thought, “Since we learn lyrics

Left and right, in the quiet of the night,

Why not memorize some scriptures?”

[Verse 3]

I carry lyrics and tunes in my head,

I can’t find one scripture except, “Jesus wept.”

With jobs, songs, travel, dinning, and more

I’m sure Christ would implore us to seek His words too.

[Chorus]

A wish I carry in my heart,

Have each day a scripture start.

For any day.

That’s my way.

Scriptures teach the Lord’s way.

Not like lyrics that cause pain.

Not lyrics that create brain stain.

I still sing favorite songs

Those that please and lift.

But they’re not enough.

I find scriptures for me.

They can my compass be.

[short solo]

[verse 4]

After 85 years, could it be

Only pop-song lyrics come to me?

Can my data base mind

Even find one scripture divine?

[verse 5]

From memory, my kids sing songs.

They know lyrics, polished and strong.

Yet I encourage learning new words,

Learn God’s words that sing like birds.

[verse 6]

I must practice and do what I say.

But self-defeating shadows darken my way.

Apostles before me have given light,

I must seek their wisdom, learn their light.

[Chorus]

A wish I carry in my heart,

Have each day a scripture start.

For any day.

That’s my way.

Scriptures teach the Lord’s way.

Not like lyrics that cause pain.

Not lyrics that create brain stain.

I still sing favorite songs

Those that please and lift.

But they’re not enough.

I find scriptures for me.

They can my compass be.
