Niki Grabs
In a clean hall with streamers and dim lights,
Niki stood dreaming, enjoying the sights.
Shapely at sixteen, she was,
But still shy, quiet, and not part of the buzz.
She wanted to dance before she went home.
Guitar Short Solo
Boys lined the walls, too scared to ask,
Laughing together, not understanding their task.
She swayed with the rhythm, feeling the beat,
But no one asked her to dance. They had two left feet.
She thought, “Should I take a chance
and ask a boy.”
Should I treat a boy like a toy?
“No one has asked me all night.”
“It’s catching. We all feel some fright.
Guitar Solo

She felt unsure, paralyzed by her thoughts.
Yet she took a chance, made a grab,
And Monte to the floor she brought.
This night, for sure, she would not be a bore.
Monte followed her lead. He felt the beat.
Animated Niki created heat. For Monty such a treat.
To say NO to Niki would be a crime.
Monte danced poorly, but for Niki, he had time.
She thought, “Should I take a chance
and ask a boy.”
Should I treat a boy like a toy?
“No one has asked me all night.”
“It’s catching. We all feel some fright.”
The song ended. Time was suspended.
They just stood still and talked.
Monte stood starring at Niki’s pretty face,
He felt he had won a marathon race.
Monte and Niki were talking away
Using their hands to make their points.
When the next slow song came around
They held each other and swayed to the sound.

Trumpet Solo
Years have passed since Monte was at the wall.
Now, how it all started they like to recall
That wonderful night in the high school hall.
When a brave girl made a mighty grab
And taught Monte to dance with her jabs.
She thought, “Should I take a chance
and ask a boy.”
Should I treat a boy like a toy?
“No one has asked me all night.”
“It’s catching. We all feel some fright.”
